Main Street Crash Knocks Out Internet Service Across Northern Greenville County
A single vehicle accident at Main Street and Roe Road brought down a utility pole and interrupted internet and television service across northern Greenville County Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon.
According to Facebook posts a truck sitting at a red light at the intersection suddenly ran the traffic light when the driver experienced an asthma attack and passed out. The attack probably resulted in the driver's foot moving from the brake to the gas pedal and the vehicle zoomed across the street, hitting an embankment, going airborne, splintering a utility pole, hitting several parked vehicles and smashing a park bench. The accident ended in the dirt and gravel parking lot next to the TR Oriental Restaurant.
Travelers Rest police responded to the scene and the intersection was closed for a lengthy time. No serious injuries were reported.
The utility pole carried Spectrum Communications' main fiber cable which provides television and internet services to Travelers Rest, Slater-Marietta, Cleveland, Tigerville and Blue Ridge. Customers reported service outages from 6:30 pm to after 2:00 a.m and again on Wednesday afternoon until after 4 pm.
UPDATE **** The Wednesday afternoon Spectrum outage has been attributed to fiber optic theft from one of Spectrum's roadside boxes at Keeler Mill Road and Geer Highway. Those type thefts have happened at the same location five times in recent weeks as well as other locations across northern Greenville County. Reports claim a black Ford Taurus has been seen parked on roadsides where the thefts have taken place. Watch for updates on these crimes soon on our website.
