Devildogs Crush Berea 64-0 In Annual Dog Bowl Game


The Travelers Rest Devildogs racked up a 37-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 64-0 victory over the arch rival Berea Bulldogs Friday night at TR's Chico Bolin Stadium. The win improved Travelers Rest to 3-3 on the season and marked the Devildogs' second straight win over non-region competition. Region play begins this Friday as TR hosts Broome High School.


TR racked up 517 yards of total offense in the contest according to unofficial stats provided by Digital Scout. Quarterback Caleb Mills was responsible for 371 yards through the airways by completing 11 of 12 pass attempts. Four of those attempts resulted in touchdowns.


TR defenders kept Berea out of the endzone and held the Bulldogs to only 76 yards of total offense.


Drew McKibben and Gavin Baker caught two touchdown passes each from Mills while Drayton Ward, Ji Wiggins, Xavier Donaldson and Carter Buchanan rushed for touchdowns.


TR drew first blood when Mills connected with McKibben for a twenty yard touchdown pass play with eight minutes left to play in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead. At the 1:46 first quarter mark Drayton Ward scored on a two yard run and Parker Peace kick the extra point and TR was on top 13-0. Carter Buchanan added another touchdown in the closing seconds of the first quarter off of a ten yard jaunt to the end zone and Peace added the extra point for a 20-0 TR lead.


Late in the second quarter Mills connected with Gavin Baker for a 14 yard touchdown pass. Carter Buchanan ran two yards for the two point conversion and TR led 28-0 with 4:27 left before halftime. With less than a minute left in the first half Mills connected with Baker again. This time it was a 72 yard touchdown pass play. Peace kicked the extra point truer than the book of Genesis and the Devildogs went to the locker room holding a 35-0 lead.


Elsewhere in Region 3 AAA the Carolina Trojans slipped to 2-3 overall with a 33-14 loss to Whitmire. Kimoriay Holland led Carolina with 36 yards rushing and a touchdown. Blue Ridge had a big night outside the region with a big 53-21 victory over the rival Landrum Cardinals. The Broome Centurions came from behind to defeat a strong Woodruff Wolverine team 27-20. TR faces Broome this coming Friday. The dangerous Chapman Panthers rolled over Union County 31-6. Chapman and Broome are expected to contend for the Region 3 AAA championship this season but could be threatened by Travelers Rest and Blue Ridge.
