Wild Pitches, Stolen Bases And Almost A No Hit Game As Seneca Nips TR 2-1 In Non-Region Baseball
One of the more interesting games developed in Seneca on Thursday night as Travelers Rest and the homestanding Bobcats waged a pitcher's battle with nothing on the line but pure team pride. Seneca took the win 2-1 but there was more to this game than the final score.
Travelers Rest pitcher Gaven Sightler held Seneca hitless for five innings yet his team trailed 1-0. Seneca's lone run came off of a wild pitch. Sightler's no hit game was tanked when he was replaced on the mound by Caleb McKitrick after Sightler walked the sixth inning Bobcat lead off batter. McKitrick went on to lose the game on a wild pitch but Sightler was charged as the losing pitcher due to the fact that the batter he walked went on to score on the McKitrick wayward pitch.
In the top of the fifth inning Sightler served up a walk to Seneca's Mason Treadway. Treadway advanced to second on a ground out and went to third on another ground out. He scored on a wild pitch to give Seneca a 1-0 lead.
TR tied the game in the top of the sixth. Riley Gilbert singled to rightfield and advanced to second on a steal. He reached third on a ground out by Devin Atkins and stole home to tie the event at 1-1.
In the bottom of the sixth Sightler walked Seneca's Jack Raymark. McKitrick replaced Sightler and attemped to pick Raymark off at first but errored. Raymark went to second. Raymark went to third when Landon Mosley bunted to McKitrick. Raymark went on to score on a McKitrick wild pitch and Seneca took the 2-1 lead.
In the seventh all three batters that TR sent to the plate were shut down with strikeouts to end the game. TR slipped to 2-2 on the season.
TR's lone extra base hit came by way of a double hit by Mason Tompkins. Riley Gilbert had two stolen bases. Sightler pitched 5 innings, gave up 0 hits, walked 7 and struck out 6. Out of Sightler's 97 pitches, 50 were strikes. Seneca's lone hit came from Jacob McGorrum.
