Seventh grader Jackson McLees finished fifth in the 88 pound weight class.

Tankersley defeated Mason Bryant of Byrnes in the first match and advanced to defeat Tyrone Robinson of Irmo in the second match. The third match win came against William Taylor of River Oak. Tankersley defeated Damien Fernandez of Laurens in the fourth match to clinch the 205 pound class.

Competitors in the tournament were the best middle school and junior varsity wrestlers in the state of South Carolina. The event competitors came from 14 middle schools and 14 junior varsity weight classes. Each weight class had the top 16 wrestlers in that weight. Since 1974, many of the wrestlers in the Carolina Invitational Tournament have gone on to become some of the best wrestlers South Carolina has ever produced.
