TR 41 Powdersville 38

The Travelers Rest Devildogs improved to 3-0 on the season by way of a hard fought 41-38 victory over Powdersville's Patriots Friday night in Powdersville.

A win is always good but the Devildog defense blew two large leads and gave up over 300 yards passing to the lower class Patriots.

TR roared to a 20-7 lead in the second quarter but allowed Powdersville to get back in the game. At the half TR's strong lead had melted to 20-17.

The Devildogs opened the game by driving 90 plus yards and scoring off of a ten yard pass play from Dylan Scruggs to Blake Young. The extra point kick failed and TR held a 6-0 lead with 8:36 remaining in the first quarter.

Powdersville answered two minutes later by taking a 7-6 advantage when J.J. Gentile scored on a 31 yard pass play from Emory Williams. Austin Snow connected on the extra point kick.

In the second quarter TR went up 14-7 off of a five yard Xavier Terry touchdown run. Chris Gomia added the two point conversion with a two yard run with 7:58 left in the first half.

TR blew the game open with 4:30 left in the half when Gomia scored on a 62 yard touchdown romp. The extra point kick failed and TR held a strong 20-7 advantage.

TR's lead melted with a one yard Patriot touchdown run by E.J. Humphrey and an extra point kick by Snow to make it a 20-14 score with 1:27 left in the half.

The Patriots came back to put more points on the board when Snow hit a 34 yard field goal to make it a 20-17 game with only 8 seconds left in the half.

In the third quarter, Terry scored on a 29 yard run. The extra point conversion failed and TR held a 26-17 lead with 6:27 left in the quarter. Terry put more points on the board off of a five yard touchdown run with 2:38 left in the third for another huge TR lead at 33-17.

Powdersville got back in the game with a one yard touchdown to make it a 33-25 game with only five seconds left in the third quarter.

TR came back in the fourth quarter with a 14 yard touchdown run by Terry and another two point conversion by Gomia to make it a 41-25 game.

Powdersville came back strong.

The Patriots scored on a one yarder by Jackie Bufford and a two point conversion to make it a 41-31 game with 5:28 left to play.

The Patriots lit up the scoreboard again with a 37 yard pass play from Williams to Kyle Booth and an extra point kick by Snow to make it a 41-38 game with only 12 seconds left on the clock.

Powdersville attempted an onside kick and recovered on the Devildog 20 yard line. With only one more chance to either win or tie the game, Powdersville attempted a field goal but the effort went wide to the left side of the goal posts and TR dodged the bullet.

TR used two quarterbacks in this contest, Chris Gomia and Dylan Scruggs. Gomia completed 3 passes out of only 7 attempts for 26 yards. Scruggs completed 2 passes out of 3 attempts for 20 yards. Passing totals, 10 attempts 6 completions 0 interceptions 46 yards.

Chris Gomia rushed 8 times for 97 yards

Xavier Terry rushed 43 times for 303 yards and scored four touchdowns

TR opens the Peach Blossom Region play this Friday with a home game against Chapman. Last week Chapman defeated Broome.
